- Calvary of immigrants, risk of minefields
Thousands of desperate refugees who were not allowed to cross the Hungarian border may be forced to traverse the dangerous mine fields in Croatia, in search of a safer Europe.
It is believed that from 60 thousand to 100 thousand pounds found in an area of 802 square kilometers in Croatia since the Balkan wars of the 90s. Cleaning their efforts were hampered by the massive flood of 2014, and is still not known how many have left many of them are still active.
However, this is a deadly dangerous prospect for refugees who since Wednesday morning are flocking to Croatia on their way to Austria and Germany.
Voluntary groups in social media have published guidelines on how to avoid mines and maps showing where mines are the main areas. While authorities say the active mine areas have warning signs, hundreds of people have died and many others were injured by them since the war ended in 1995.
