Last year saw the actor in a nearly unrecognizable role, having dropped 30 pounds for his part in 2014's Nightcrawler. And this year Jake Gyllenhaal will appear in another body transformation role - however this time, it's almost entirely opposite. On Wednesday, new stills were released of the 34-year-old actor looking extremely muscular for his role in the upcoming boxing flick Southpaw.

The film - slated for release on July 24 - follows Gyllenhaal as Billy Hope, a champion boxer. One shot shows the Donnie Darko actor in the ring, dripping with sweat and blood. Other shots show Gyllenhaal with his co-star Rachel McAdams, who plays Gyllenhaal's wife. The two are seen sharing an intimate embrace as Gyllenhaal's Billy Hope still wears his boxing gloves. And more stills show Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson, who looks spiffy in a suit as he plays Gyllenhaal's character's promoter. The film follows Hope at the peak of his career when, at the behest of his wife, he quits in order to spend more time with his daughter. When McAdams' character is tragically killed, Hope struggles to maintain control of his life and ultimately loses custody of his little girl. Hope resolves to return to the world of boxing and to do so, he enlists the help of of Titus 'Tick' Willis, played by Forest Whitaker. In 2014, Antoine Fuqua - famed director of 2001's Training Day - was tapped to direct Southpaw, with Gyllenhaal set to replace Eminem as well. Fuqua has been a notable force in the action film genre, directing recent hits like Shooter, Brooklyn's Finest and The Equalizer. The director's latest project is a remake of the classic western, The Magnificent Seven, which will star Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt and Matt Bomer among others.
